ARGUMENT

Depuis quelques décennies, l’analyse des émotions a pris un essor important dans les études consacrées à l’argumentation comme en analyse du discours ou dans les sciences de communication et de l’information (Mots 75), suivant en cela un cours parallèle aux travaux des historiens sur la construction sociale et culturelle de la sensibilité et donc des émotions. Parallèlement, les travaux en psychologie cognitive ou en sociologie constructiviste ont souligné la rationalité de la réaction émotive liée à l’évaluation d’une situation. L’opposition raison vs émotions, telle qu’elle est pensée par Elias (comme si les sociétés - ou du moins la société occidentale… - redoublaient le trajet des individus, en allant des émotions infantiles au rationalisme de la maturité), est désormais contestée dans les sciences humaines. Ce mouvement n’est toutefois pas uniforme dans les études sur l’argumentation, car d’aucuns rejettent la dimension argumentative des émotions (Van Eemeren et Grootendorst) ou traitent de « l’argumentation dans la langue » (Ducrot, Carel) indépendamment de cette entrée. Quoi qu’il en soit, les émotions font depuis deux décennies l’objet d’approches multiples, productives, comme en témoignent les travaux de Plantin (cf. notamment sa collaboration avec Traverso et Doury pour le colloque de 1997, dont les actes sont publiés en 2000 et son ouvrage paru en 2011), ou encore trois colloques en 2011 : L’émotion, de l’espace privé à l’espace public, XIXe-XXIe siècles (Paris Ouest, Paris Est Créteil Val de Marne, Paris Diderot, Panthéon Assas, Versailles-Saint Quentin en Yvelines) ; Cognition, Emotion et communication (Sorbonne Nouvelle, Université de Chypre) ; Les passions collectives : culture, politique et société (AISS, Sorrento).

On se propose d’analyser la place des émotions en discours, en interaction, et, plus spécifiquement le rôle des émotions en tant qu’elles font l’objet d’une argumentation (Plantin 2005), et donc qu’elles sont argumentables (Walton). Ce faisant, sans évacuer le rôle d’adjuvant d’un processus argumentatif, on privilégiera l’analyse de leur rôle argumentatif explicite.

Les travaux, après expertises, feront l’objet de deux publications, dans les revues Semen (Presses universitaires de Franche-Comté) et Le Discours et la langue (Université libre de Bruxelles)

Call for contributions

The INTERNATIONAL PRAGMATICS ASSOCIATION (IPrA) was established in 1986 to represent the field of pragmatics in its widest interdisciplinary sense as a functional (i.e. cognitive, social, and cultural) perspective on language and communication (see website: http://ipra.ua.ac.be). IPrA has its conferences every second year, and from 1999 (Reims, France), I regularly contribute to them by organizing panels on argumentation (some of them were organized together with Jean Goodwin, U. of Iowa).
The next IPrA conference is going to take place in New Delhi, 8 - 13 September 2012 (see website: http://ipra.ua.ac.be/main.aspx?c=.CONFERENCE13), and on this occasion Leo Groarke (U. of Windsor) and I plan to organize a panel on Non-verbal means of argumentation; we would like to explore not just visual, musical (sonic), gestural (mimical) and emotional elements of argumentation, but also (and possibly focusing on) smell, taste and touch as possible contributors to argumentation.
The overall panel proposal should be submitted by September 15 2012, while individual proposal to be presented within the panel should be submitted by November 1 2012.

If you are interested in this adventurous enterprise, please contact me (igor.zzagar@gmail.com) and Leo (groarke@uwindsor.ca) not later than September 10, stating your interest in the panel, giving us a working title of your contribution, and a short description of what you are planning to do.

I should emphasize, however, that one has to be an IPrA member at the time of the submission as well as at the time of the conference.

L’équipe du GRAL a le plaisir de diffuser l’appel à contribution du colloque “Interpréter selon les genres” (genres de discours, genres littéraires, etc.) qui se tiendra à l’Université Cadi Ayyad de Marrakech (Maroc), du 18 au 20 avril 2013. Cet évènement est organisé en partenariat avec l’Université de Liège (Sémir Badir), le pôle Praxitexte de l’Université de Lorraine, et le CEDITEC de l’Université de Paris-Est Créteil.

Ce colloque a pour objectif de répondre à la question du genre, longtemps cantonnée aux intérêts taxinomiques, de manière à en faire une catégorie essentielle pour l’interprétation. Pourquoi avons nous besoin des genres ? Comment cette catégorie est-elle construite par l’esprit humain pour comprendre des films, des émissions de télévision, des tableaux, des spots publicitaires, des articles de presse, des textes littéraires, des discours publics, des messages dans des réseaux sociaux, parmi bien d’autres productions langagières ?

Modalités de soumission des communications : Les propositions sont à adresser par voie électronique à : genre.marrakech2013@gmail.com avant le 20 octobre 2012. Les articles soumis décriront un travail original et novateur. Les contributions devront contenir un état de l’art et des références à des travaux antérieurs pertinents. Le résumé sera accompagné d’une page de renseignements pratiques comprenant : nom, affiliation, téléphone, adresse postale et électronique. Les résumés (ne dépassant pas 3000 signes) doivent être en Times 12 avec interligne simple et en format .doc (Word) ou .rtf. Les contributions feront l’objet d’une double évaluation anonyme par le comité scientifique. Le retour des propositions de contributions sera communiqué le 20 janvier 2013, et le programme du colloque sera diffusé le 1er mars 2013.

L’équipe du GRAL a le plaisir d’annoncer l’organisation d’un Colloque en rhétorique sur le thème : “Contemporary Rhetorical Citizenship: Purposes, Practices, and Perspectives”, à Copenhague, du 15 au 18 janvier 2013. Cet évènement est organisé par la Section de Rhétorique du Département “Média, Cognition et Communication” de l’Université de Copenhague.

Argumentaire scientifique : With the concept of rhetorical citizenship we want to draw critical attention to the ways in which being a citizen in a modern democratic state is in many respects a discursive phenomenon. Citizenship is not just a condition such as holding a passport, it is not just behavior such as voting; citizenship also has a communicative aspect: Some perform citizenship when they watch a political debate on TV or discuss a program about homeless people with their colleagues over lunch - or when, one day, they don’t duck behind the fence but engage their cranky neighbor in conversation about her views on city street lighting. Others enact citizenship when they engage in political debates on Facebook or Twitter or join their friends in coming up with the most poignant wording for a protest sign the day before a street demonstration. And for others still, “rhetorical citizenship” is a distant ideal far from the realities of their everyday life; because the legal citizenship, literacy, and media access that such a conception of citizenship often presupposes aren’t within their reach, their experience with rhetorical citizenship is one of exclusion.

Rhetoric, with its double character as academic discipline and practice, stands in a unique position to engage the linguistic and discursive aspects of collective civic engagement. Drawing on and in collaboration with neighboring fields of inquiry such as political science, discourse studies, linguistics, media studies, informal logic, practical philosophy and social anthropology, scholars of rhetoric are able to study actual communicative behavior as it circulates in various fora and spheres - from face to face encounters to mediated discourse. With our diverse theoretical and methodological backgrounds we hold many keys to pressing concerns such as the alleged polarization and coarsening of the ‘tone’ in public debate, the turning away from political engagement toward smaller spheres of interest, and the general difficulty in making politics work constructively in many parts of the world, not least the EU.We invite attendees - scholars, teachers, students, and citizens across a range of disciplinary traditions - to extend our knowledge of the social roles of rhetoric through theoretical and critical study, and to consider our roles as public intellectuals: how are we to name, describe, criticize, analyze, and, indeed, undertake or teach rhetorical action on matters of communal concern whether locally, nationally, or internationally?

We invite papers that help address questions such as, e.g.:

- How is rhetorical citizenship to be defined and developed as a critical frame for studying rhetoric in society?

- What conditions must obtain for rhetorical citizenship to be possible and thrive?

- What rhetorical processes and maneuvers can be observed in practitioners of rhetorical citizenship?

- How is rhetorical citizenship instantiated across genres, settings, and cultural or geographical settings?

- How is rhetorical citizenship experienced differently, even controversially, depending on power differentials and social or regional constraints?

- How can rhetorical history and pedagogy serve as a resource for contemporary theory, practice and critique of rhetorical citizenship?

- What disciplinary connections need to be made or reinvigorated for fruitful interdisciplinary work on rhetorical citizenship?

- What are potentials and pitfalls for sound and dynamic public rhetorical engagement?

- What is good and what is poor rhetorical citizenship?

Le Groupe de recherche en Rhétorique et en Argumentation Linguistique (GRAL), sous la direction d’Emmanuelle Danblon, organise ce mercredi 18 avril 2012 une Journée d’étude autour du thème “Théorie et pratique de l’Argumentation”. Cette double approche du phénomène argumentatif permettra de soulever des questions essentielles pour les démocraties contemporaines. Quels sont les enjeux d’une formation à l’argumentation aujourd’hui ? Pourquoi s’outiller pour décider ? L’argumentation peut-elle devenir une seconde nature ? Comment se diriger dans un monde incertain ? Dans quel sens l’argumentation est-elle un art citoyen ? Telles sont les problématiques qui seront abordées et discutées à l’occasion de cette réunion scientifique.

« La rhétorique en Europe » - 9-13 octobre 2013

L’équipe du GRAL est heureuse de diffuser le premier appel à contribution pour le colloque européen : « La rhétorique en Europe » qui se tiendra du 9 au 13 octobre 2013 à l’Université de la Sarre et/ou à l’Université du Luxembourg. Il s’agit là de fêter un anniversaire déterminant dans l’histoire de la discipline : en 387 avant J.-C., comme on le suppose, il y a donc près de 2400 ans, Isocrate fonda son école de rhétorique et de philosophie.

Cet appel s’adresse à tous ceux qui abordent dans leurs recherches - toutes disciplines confondues - la rhétorique en Europe.

Il convient d’adresser les propositions (exposé, poster, atelier, etc.) d’ici le 15 mai 2012, en français, anglais ou allemand à l’adresse de contact. Les inscriptions auront lieu début octobre 2012.

L’appel à communications du prochain congrès de la Société Canadienne pour l’Etude de la Rhétorique vient de paraître. Le congrès se tiendra du 31 mai au 1er juin 2012 à Waterloo (Ontario), sur le thème  “Rhétorique et incertitude”.

This conference (April 19th – 22nd 2012) in honour of Ivo Škarić is an international conference aiming at presentation of new scientific research and knowledge within the interdisciplinary field of rhetoric and argumentation theory.

Professor Emeritus Ivo Škarić was interested in various areas of phonetics, defined as the science of speech. Exploring the phenomenon of speech communications, he revealed a natural connection between phonetics and rhetoric both in education and evaluation of public speakers (politicians, teachers, speakers in the electronic media, etc.). One of the results of his scholarly work is The School of Rhetoric for gifted high school students, which now bears his name. His students and colleagues wanted to name the new event after him – this time as a synonym for the scientific conference devoted to subjects in which he was the indisputable authority in Croatia. The organizers hope that this meeting will become a permanent meeting point for rhetorician from around the world in order to contribute to the development of rhetoric. Scholars working in the field of rhetoric and neighboring disciplines are invited to submit.

Abstracts should be submitted no later than 15th January 2012 by email to dis@ffzg.hr

Following a peer review process, notifications of acceptance will be sent by 15th February 2012. Abstracts should be written in Croatian or English and should not exceed 500 words, excluding author details (name and affiliation) and references. Abstracts should include a description of the research, aim and method and the most important results. Conference papers will be published in the Proceedings.

ANALYTICAL THEME:

Both the EU and the EU cooperation in external affairs and foreign policy matters are contested discursive fields. The EU holds, indeed, a dual nature On the one hand, it is an extremely advanced experience of multilateral cooperation, in which member states pooled together, in an unprecedented way, resources, institutions and competences at the supranational level. On the other, one of the objectives of the EU is “to advance in a wider world”, “to attain objectives [the member states] have in common” (articles 21.1 and 1 of the Treaty of Lisbon). How do different national and institutional actors frame and coordinate their discourses towards the wider world on behalf of the EU? How is the EU’s inherent plurality reflected into institutional and international discourses? Is it possible to disentangle the voices converging in the EU’s choir?

CALL FOR PAPERS

The workshop aims to promote rigorous conceptualisations of the nexus between EU institutions and discourses. It welcomes original contributions aimed at answering the following questions:

1) How can we conceptualise the relationship between EU identities, institutions, and discourses? 2) How discourses have structured EU’s institutional evolution and how the EU’s institutional evolution has impacted its discourses? 3) What are the interactions between foreign policy discourses of different national and institutional actors in the post-Lisbon environment? 4) How do the various EU actors elaborate different discursive patterns with bilateral partners and within multilateral milieus?

The workshop invites participants to integrate in their analyses three main dimensions of the EU’s institutional and international discourse, namely:

a) The form and expression of discourses (embodied in semantic analysis);
b) The meaning and attributed meaning of discourses (relational and semiotic analysis); and
c) Actions associated to discourses, i.e. the language in use (van Dijck, 2001).

Participants are invited to present their contributions in draft format. Final versions of papers will largely benefit from the innovative formula of the WIRE Workshop (see below), which specifically aims to work on and discuss extensively all participants’ contributions. Papers already submitted for publication elsewhere will not be considered.

RESEARCH FRAMEWORK

The workshop is part of the ULB/IEE research agenda in GR:EEN (Global Re-ordering: Evolution though European Networks), a European Commission FP7 project that studies the current and future role of the EU in an emerging multi-polar world (for more information, please, visit: www.greenfp7.eu).

WORKSHOP FORMAT:

The “Speaking Europe Abroad Workshop” is going to take place the 14th February, from 10 am to the 15th February at 12.30-1 pm. The workshop is the third of a series of innovative Workshops on International Relations (WIRE). WIRE workshops have a unique format: the number of participants is strictly limited, full papers are distributed long before the event, and authors speak only at the closure of discussions. More specifically, the 15-20 participants receive eight selected papers one month prior to the event, as the format necessitates reading them beforehand. At the workshop, a discussant kicks off each session by briefly introducing a paper. Then, the group discusses it for approximately one hour, providing an opportunity for an extensive and in-depth discussion involving all participants. The last few words of each session are given to the author for a short response to comments and criticisms. The WIRE series are an opportunity for scholars to receive detailed feedback on ongoing research projects and to get acquainted in an informal setting.

FOLLOW UP OF THE WORKSHOP

The best papers presented to the workshop will be selected to be part of an edited volume and a special issue in a leading international journal. Contacts with publisher and journal editors are already under way.

SUBMISSION PROCESS AND DEADLINES

Please submit a paper proposal (500 - 800 words), a biographical note and contact details (email and University address) to Dr Caterina Carta (please, find the address below), by October the 10th 2012. Authors will be notified of the acceptance/rejection of their papers by October the 18th, once the review process is completed.

Selected participants will be invited to send a complete draft version of their papers (between 5.000 and 10.000 words) by January the 1st 2012 at the latest. Authors who fail to send their paper on time will be removed from the program and expenses will not be reimbursed.

COVERED EXPENSES

The IEE/ULB will cover travel and accommodation expenses to all participants, both for the theoretically-oriented workshop in February and the policy-oriented workshop in August. No registration fee is required.

L’équipe du GRAL est heureuse d’annoncer la publication de l’Appel à communication du prochain colloque du groupe “Ci-Dit” qui se tiendra à l’Université de Stockholm du 14 au 16 juin 2012 autour du thème : “Rapporter et être rapporté(e) : une affaire de genre ?”

Les organisateurs du Colloque encouragent tout spécialement :

1) les communications liant intimement les problématiques des marqueurs linguistiques, de la polyphonie discursive et de l’intertextualité au paramètre masculin-féminin. Les études comparatives discours écrit/discours oral sous l’angle de ce paramètre seront également les bienvenues ;

2) les communications de type épistémologique et théorique sur la circulation des constructions langagières et sémiotiques de l’identité sexuelle.

Le but de cette rencontre est de croiser différentes approches/disciplines : recherches en analyse des discours (oraux et écrits) médiatiques, politiques et littéraires, linguistique textuelle, sociolinguistique et recherches sur les genres sexués.
